We're on the cusp of a major industrial transformation, we've gone from the wooden age to the copper age to the bronze age and the iron age and now we're part way into the information age driven by all things digital including computers, networks, the Internet, big data, AI, robotics and renewables opening up a massive opportunity to transform the transport sector and in turn the world economy given time. CRSPR and other gene editing technologies will transform our understanding of what it is to be human...but that is another story.
Fully autonomous vehicles will be widespread by 2030 enabling TAAS, reduced congestion, pollution, improved road safety and the re-use of urban buildings currently dedicated as car parks...we are going cleaner, greener, smarter and quieter.
The nordics get it and so does the rest of Europe and north Asia, the US now too, we've crossed the tipping point where the whole of life cost of owning an EV is cheaper than the petrol or diesel alternative while the green passport concept and penalties for tailpipe emissions are accelerating the move away from carbon powered cars.
Roughly 70 million new cars were sold last year and about the same number of motorbikes (estimates vary from 50m to 74m) and while EV sales are expanding at a compound rate of something like 30% annually it is considerably higher for two wheelers. Then there's buses and trucks, trains and construction equipment and even aircraft, Northvolt aims to have batteries in European commuter planes by 2026 plus unsatisfied demand for domestic and grid scale battery storage plus battery demand for the recharging network once car sales take off.
How many times did we hear the words "too big to fail" during the GFC, well how about too important to fail...that's the way I see Talga's graphite deposit and the important role it has to fulfil to help herald in this new industrial age.
Sweden has an opportunity here to stand tall and make it happen.
Come 2025 everyone will be saying I told you so, so why didn't we get on board back then?
