In the US, the Ellume COVID-19 Home Test (Ellume Limited) and Abbott BinaxNOW COVID-19 Ag Card (Abbott Diagnostics) rapid antigen tests (both with an FDA EUA) are now available without a prescription for completely at-home, self-collection testing for SARS-CoV-2. Both tests use nasal-swab specimens of symptomatic or asymptomatic persons aged ≥ 2 years. The Ellume test is available for USD39 (single-test package) at CVS (online) and will be available at most CVS locations by the end of May. The Abbott test is available for USD24 (2-test package) at CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart (online and in stores for all 3 retailers) and will be available nationwide at other major food, drug, and retail outlets in the near future. Both tests use a Bluetooth-connected analyzer in conjunction with a smartphone app to provide digital results in ≤ 15 minutes; the digital results from these antigen tests may not be adequate for the purpose of travel. False results may occur; asymptomatic persons with a positive result should be considered presumptively positive until confirmed by a PCR test, and symptomatic persons with a negative result should seek follow-up care from their health care provider.
