Maybe you got these figures for a particular gold mining region, but it can't be right for the world as a whole. Australia produces 10% of the world's gold and consumes 1% of the world's energy. If gold mining uses 10% of the world's energy, that would mean that all of Australia's energy use is devoted to gold mining!
