An option is a market mechanism to instill regret.
If you hold free ones the share price invariably will not rise to a point where you want to exercise them (convert them into a regular share) = regret. If you sell them for a small profit prior to the SP going up - that will be the one case in 30 where the SP DOES rise to a very profitable point = regret. If you were silly enough to buy many of them on market from a HC pump brigade and they unsurprisingly do not reach beyond exercise price you have completely done your $$ - Big regret. This is the most common form options take in the ASX small cap space for retailers.
If by some miracle you hold options in a company that multi-bags and you make a handsome profit by converting shares and then selling them you will kick yourself you hadn't doubled, or tripled your initial investment, as any fool could have seen this was a winner = regret
(My FFX options caused regret as per the second example above. Maybe yours will be the last one.)
Goodluck
