It's not so much that they lost it, it's that they thought they'd found an extra 18 million bbls that had previously been missed and have now realised it wasn't there after all.
They probably should never have put that oil into 2P and left it as 3P but they're certainly not the first oiler to get led astray by optimistic bias. 2P is the number the market focuses on hence the extreme price reaction.
