Shorts need SP to go down to make profits. Via the buy-back program, the company is effectively putting a floor for the SP. So when there is no profit to make shorts will have to close out their positions to avoid SP upside risk. If AMP were to declare a half yearly dividend in August that would be the beginning of a big short squeeze.
