it was simply because people could relate to him and his message
build the wall
make america great again
etc
simple messages that people could easily relate too
which is the reason his popularity grew over the 4 year period of his presidency
isn't there a saying keep it simple stupid or something like that
simple messages that are easy to relate to if you want people to vote for you

Yeah, that's it. That's what Trump did, in fact he kept it simple and stupid, and the stupid simple people liked him coz 'he speaks like us'.
