South Australian fish exported to France

SOUTH Australian tuna, yellow-tail kingfish and oysters will be on the menus of the finest French restaurants under a new agreement with Europe's top chefs.

Tuna pioneer Hagen Stehr has led the charge to get SA seafood on the shopping list of French chefs and says local producers "can't go any higher up".

The State Government has signed an agreement with the French chapter of Europe's association of top chefs, Euro-Toques International, to use local produce and be listed on menus as being South Australian.

SA is the only Australian state to sign an agreement with the association, which has 400 members.

Mr Stehr, who is chairman of Clean Seas Tuna Limited, said the State Government had been proactive in pushing local produce to the rest of the world. He said local producers had a lot to gain because of it and now needed to take the next step to create demand.

Agriculture, Food and Fisheries Minister Paul Caica said the agreement would give producers "exclusive" access to showcase events, giving them "extraordinary" access to food connoisseurs.

"Euro-Toques International counts among its members the world's most influential chefs from some of Europe's finest hotels, including the Ritz in Paris," he said.
