The top statue is a modern work of art of course.
I guess snakes are phallic. They have the power of life a death over any animal they bite. They must have struck an ingrained fear into early man who seems to have worshipped any animal with a particular potency. Big cats get a bit of a run as well, along with crocodiles.
The snake in Genesis is different in that it is symbolic for materialism in that it is a creature with its entire body attached to the earth.
