I thought this was all chip shortage story too.... I was wrong.
Turns out many vendors stopped manufacturing during COVID. Then once things opened up, demand went crazy. When inventory is already low and demand skyrockets, you get supply shortages pretty quickly.
IIRC, AMD came out with a statement saying they're nearing the end of their GPU shortage, as they've upped production capacity. I imagine many others will be in a similar scenario - that is, they've now managed to increase production to meet demand.
Rather than this being purely a chip shortage, it may have been a production capacity story in addition to a chip shortage. And the former at the very least, seems to be abating.
