My thoughts were based on human nature more than anything. Its been a long time since CEOs have had anything good to offer going forward, and in the last quarter some even declined to give guidance citing lack of visibility etc. At this point they might be feeling pressure to give investors some relief (misguided or not), and at least leave the impression they are in control of the company's destiny.
Otherwise people may start asking why they are being paid so much.
