A LEADING Vietnamese industrial manufacturing group has bought the controversial Roper Valley iron ore project about 600km southeast of Darwin.
Australia’s Foreign Investment Review Board has given the OK for steel firm Hoa Phat to buy Roper Valley from United Arab Emirates company Al Rawda Resources, which secured the defunct project from administrators in 2016.
The Hoa Phat empire is furniture, steel pipe, steel, refrigeration, real estate and agriculture.
It says it is continuing to research purchasing other new iron mines in Australia to ensure a long-term supply of at least 50 per cent of its iron ore demand (equivalent to 10 million tonnes a year).

Al Rawda had applied, through its Australian subsidiary Northern Territory Iron Ore, to the NT government to reopen the mine in 2018 attracting the attention of local Indigenous leaders, fishermen and tourism operators concerned about potential environmental impacts.
At the time local Indigenous communities were concerned about barging the ore up the Roper river for transshipping in the Gulf of Carpentaria.
According to Hoa Phat Group, the Roper Valley iron ore project has an estimated 320 million tonnes of reserves with a four-million-tonne-per-year mining capacity.
