I read posts with people arguing about dirty generation vs renewables and how do we meet baseload demand, etc. The real engineering problem is 'system stability' and it doesn't matter what is connected to the grid as a supply source (coal-fired, gas-fired, hydro, storage batteries, solar farms, wind farms, geo-thermal, etc.) it must meet fluctuating and peak demand, and most importantly it must ensure system stability and allow inter-connectivity. There are still a lot of power intensive industries in this country that utilise sophisticated technology and protection that is highly sensitive to system fluctuations (voltage, frequency, power factor) and we must not kid ourselves that generating sources at the mercy of the sun and wind will provide the system stability required. This is where reliable 'baseload' generation is vitally important to system stability and until we can find a plentiful supply of alternative fuels to coal and gas (nuclear?) then they are here to stay for a long while yet and trying to suggest otherwise is foolhardy. So by all means get your solar panels on the roof to power your house and plug in your EV, but don't forget what is required to reliably supply our critical infrastructure and major industries on a 24/7 basis. This is a science and engineering problem, not ideology.
