A SENIOR official at Shougang Group, who has close ties to a Rio Tinto employee being held in China on suspicion of espionage, has been detained by Beijing police for suspected commercial crimes.
The 21st Century Business Herald reported today that police arrested Tan Yixin, assistant general manager of Shougang International Trade & Engineering Corp and head of Shougang’s iron-ore trading unit, at his office on Tuesday.
Mr Tan has close ties to Stern Hu, the Rio Tinto employee accused of stealing Chinese state secrets, the report said citing an unnamed industry source.
It was reported that the authorities have also detained several employees of other steel mills in China.
The newspaper said the authorities may extend their investigation to China's major steel production areas in Shandong and Hebei provinces.
