"So to get back to the topic : Steel Mills or Universities, IMO we need both but with a particular emphasis on
steel mills because that is where our strengths lie and where we have a competitive advantage.

    We have abundance of:
    -Iron Ore
    -Met Coals
    -LNG
    -Bauxite
    -copper & base metals
    -Gold
    -etc"

can you not see a day when we will not need these resources?? at the very least - where and how we harvest them now??

I can easily see that at any moment in our technological race that we get a news headline saying -- we've found a replacement for steel - and it's only 5% of the cost.

I can also see the mining - or harvesting of chucks of rock flying through space - some of them are pure metal

I can also see how we will harvest things straight from the atmosphere

many of these ideas are beyond conceptual already -- years back there was a 3D printer that was using sand to make objects just sand.

the real 'concept' then was to be able to use what's already in the air - so, making things from what we would call nothing.

even without going into fantasy land - material technologies are racing ahead - I suspect that Australia's 'resource' demand will not be in the not too distant future --

    what then?

surely the answer lies in what the Chinese and the US are now doing?

we do NOT have to be a superpower ----------- we only need a few good ideas and discoveries - that's all we need --

we are capable of it ------ we have a history of it already - just not enough -

    'trumpet software'
    'wifi'
now - Sydney University and Microsoft - making regular discoveries towards Quantum computing --
even scram jet engines - sure we didn't lead the pack - but, a bunch of Aussies did for a pittance - what NASA had spent hundreds of millions on -

Quantum computing alone -when cracked will change human society forever

    no steel needed

oh - and, btw ------------ you miss the point that almost all resource companies in Oz are foreign owned ------------ so, if we were to make 'steel' as such -

we would be buying the ore from foreigners - for a low margin, dirty business

    not the smartest idea
