Whilst they apparently stopped digging around the 1960s they continued to process the tailing dumps, on and off. The last time around the mid 1980's where they also removed the pier/dock that was made out of tailings and processed them for Cryolite, again. It was this huge movement of tailings from within the ocean that I believe caused the spike in pollution within in the environmental report.
