ah dont be quick to judge this strategy - probably hedge fund standard to be short one and long the other - long a dollar weighted volatility of one against the other and close them both out when profitable in aggregate - hedge the "sector" risk and trade the fundamental risk between the two.
edit: sorry I misread: i thought the implication was that he was short one and long the other. dont mind me - short both does sound silly lol. as you were.
