Also, @Sorepocket, on this point. There is the question of which charities to donate to, and the question of which companies to invest in. When it comes to charity, my favorites are Doctors Without Borders (Medecins sans Frontieres), and local food banks and homeless charities.
When it comes to investment, I look for opportunities to earn money while supporting a company that is seeking to do good in this world. I would never invest in a tobacco company. I am happy to support a company leading the way to a new era in medicine. And I would never celebrate the demise of a company that is working to save lives.
