Hi butcherboy, I don't want to get on my soapbox, but I get concerned with your intentions with "I've figured out that I can probably do a better job myself than some of the fund managers out there".

My question is that perhaps you were looking at the wrong Fund Managers? Were the running the same type of investment strategy and research process that you are considering?

Minerva is right about having the time and you are questioning your ability.

Having an SMSF requires responsibility, including time. If you want to trade shares but don't want the admin hassles, you MAY be able to find a super offering that fits the bill, but remember, time is money and you need to understand what you can / will do differently to the fundies you compared to.

Anyone can be a hero with hindsight, especially with a SMSF when they don't properly work out their actual return for the year and make comparisons.

I'm not fully for or against self-managed or public offer super, just doing what's right for you for the right reasons.

    Cheers
