Market has it wrong. Banks make more when interest rates rise as there's more of a buffer and room to move then when its going down according to an instos remarks I spoke to. As mentioned mortgage insurance insulates the banks from any downturn. In fact banks will make more money as any loans get paid out in full for any deficiency by the mortgage insurer!
P.S. The only person losing in this scenario of "plunging house prices?" is the customer who defaults.
