I attended a meeting with Stuart Nicholls from Strike in Jan '20 in Zurich and he explained that the shallow Limestone along the WA coastline is quite destructive to seismic analysis and even with quality 3D seismic data one gets a bad picture of the deeper structures. Hence in the past, the Permian formations of Perth Basin were considered full of tight gas.
Everything changed in 2015 when AWE saw unexpected gas during an appraisal drilling in Early Permian tight sandstone and decided to keep drilling into the Kingia sandstone …and accidentally discovered Waitsia…
Imagine if already in 1967 someone would have decided to drill North Erregulla-1 about 500m deeper... The entire o+g history of WA would probably have been totally different...
