European law banning new petrol and diesel cars imminent – report

Leaked details have revealed the European Union will push for strict new laws, with an end to internal-combustion cars in sight.

Further details have emerged of proposed laws effectively ending the sale of brand-new petrol and diesel vehicles across Europe.

The European Union is set to unveil a plan on 14 July 2021 mandating only zero-emissions vehicles to be sold from 2035, with stricter regulations coming into force beforehand.

It's understood a 65 per cent cut in emissions will be imposed on new cars and commercial vans by 2030 based on 2021 levels – 5.0 per cent more than was previously expected – according to an official document seen by business news outlet Bloomberg.

An earlier report suggesting the law would impose a 60 per cent reduction in 2021 new-car emissions prompted German automotive association VDA to condemn the move, suggesting it would "practically force the European automotive industry to market only battery electric vehicles".

The change to a rumoured 65 per cent reduction from 2021 emissions levels is expected to put even greater pressure on the industry, with petrol or diesel vehicles likely needing to adopt a hybrid system in order to meet the strict requirements.

All brand-new passenger cars and vans will need to be either fully-electric or hydrogen-electric by 2035 under the 'zero-emissions' mandate.

French President Emmanuel Macron met with executives and union representatives overnight to discuss the proposed changes, with the industry requesting greater support from the state to assist with the transition to electric vehicles.
