Instead of playing the role of partner/enabler at the checkout, they're now wanting to own shoppers? I just don't see how this can work at scale - with increasing CAC (unless they can do what Airbnb did, and completely own organic), and the long road ahead to altering current consumer shopping intent - i.e starting search in Google, Instagram, Pinterest or Amazon/Ebay. Could be wrong, Could be right.

I take your point. But what if shopify took the same attitude 5 years ago?

This is the nature of disruption. if merchants can get more traffic with higher basket sizes, why does the starting point need to be google or Amazon? Id be $hitting myself if I was apple or Amazon too.
