You will almost never actually see gold in core. Especially at Estelle.
However, geologists know what they are looking at and will generally know when they hit something with potential for higher grades. In Estelle this will be a combination of vein density and sulphide concentration (specifically, arsenopyrite) in those veins. The geologist wil basically be able to make these observations by eye and with a handlens the second the core comes out of the tube.
