It's like putting selastic between tiles or a joint in a bridge or concrete footpath. The concrete may swell with heat but the infill with a substantially different coefficient of expansion tends to provide the relative or apparent "give". Note too if you get a lot less heating (thermal runaway at the extreme) you get less expansion. That's why the HPA is used in the cathode. Polymers with more "give" have also been tried in the anode with some success.
