Australians oppose 'forest hungry' pulp mill: Greens
    Australian Associated Press | AAP

"Prime Minister Rudd and Premier Bartlett are offside with the majority of Australians who can see that building this forest-hungry, polluting pulp mill is the wrong way to go

    - Greens leader Bob Brown

A new poll shows 74 per cent of those surveyed oppose the plan for a Gunns pulp mill in Tasmania's Tamar Valley, the Australian Greens say.

A Galaxy Poll, commissioned by the Greens, found almost three quarters were against the construction of the mill with just 14 per cent in favour.

The remaining 12 per cent were not sure either way.

Greens leader Bob Brown said the poll was proof the federal and state governments were out of touch with the common man.

"Prime Minister (Kevin) Rudd and (Tasmanian) Premier (David) Bartlett are offside with the majority of Australians who can see that building this forest-hungry, polluting pulp mill is the wrong way to go," Senator Brown said.

About 1,100 people were surveyed for the poll, with 42 per cent replying they were strongly opposed to the mill, compared to the three per cent that were strongly supportive.

It was also a warning to international investors to stay away from the "deeply unpopular" project, Senator Brown said, or else face a drop in their global reputation.

The federal government has long backed the mill, provided it meets environmental guidelines.
