I know BHP gets bandied about a lot as an acquirer for just about everything. I personally have have heard Marius say, "our business is focused on large scale, upstream, long life, expandable assets" Tier One is what he talks about. Well the KNP is the largest scale Ni laterite defined deposit in the world. It has had significant study conducted by Vale in its pre-feasibility study and its report covered only part of the greater deposit.
BHP is a 15% shareholder and has good relations with HRR management. I also know that BHP was furious when Inco(Vale)jumped them on the KNP initially. I know it is a bit of a long shot but it certainly is a possibility given MK's comments about nickel yesterday and the chance that they may not sell Ravensthorpe after all.
Have a great day
