I worked for BlueScope steel for 25 years at their Westernport Plant.
From memory back then , we were producing around 5 million tons of steel per annum and China was producing 800 million tons.
The increase in iron ore price was hurting BlueScope too.
Can we compete with China.
No.
WE couldn't even make quality steel to please the car manufactures. Too many defects they said.
