the troubles with the ins and outs IMHO is that in/out becomes a mindset - and then the nice opportunities (eg FLT - $3.60 - $13.00 odd in 4 months) are easily missed - because of my in/out mindset.
I have found, for me, [note: disclaimer!], that in/out swings are not as profitable as fundamental research combined with a bit of art, a pinch of patience, and nuts of iron.
I used to prefer to take large positions and then milk option premiums via covered calls - but even that altered my mindset to in/out ... But I guess everyone's mind is different.
At the end of the day, I hold a very Ben Graham-esque view in that the key to any investor's success is their level of self understanding and control, COMBINED and applied along with their financial intelligence.
