Lithium miners charge into the top 100

Australia’s lithium miners could become a fixture of the local sharemarket’s major indices, with a favourable supply and demand equation propelling the soon-to-be merged Orocobre and Galaxy Resources into the top 100 stocks.

Physical demand for lithium and other battery materials such as nickel, copper and cobalt has been increasing, and miners are now charging up to three times as much as they were a year ago for their output.

Pilbara Minerals, Galaxy Resources and Orocobre all hit record highs on Wednesday, and all three have more than doubled in value since the start of 2021.

“Lithium demand is strong and prices are increasing,” said Argonaut Funds Management chief investment officer David Franklyn. “All major producers are signalling strong demand for their product.”

The three major lithium miners are asserting their dominance just as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report issued this week poses grim new scenarios about rising global temperatures.

Since the start of the month, Pilbara Minerals has surged close to 40 per cent, breaking into the top 100 largest companies on the ASX and overtaking Ampol, Bank of Queensland and Bendigo & Adelaide Bank.

In the last 12 months, its value has increased sixfold, reflecting the hefty increase in the price of lithium.
