yelrom - they can offset and even reduce that cost to nil by judicious buying and selling as the stock price moves. The ability to do so varies of course and market conditions in general are a factor too.
Timing around announcements being made, and not, and false rumour spreading plus negative journalist coverage being helped a long all help some to achieve same.
