Second lease of life for old Morning Star Gold Mine
    October 16, 2008 12:00am

ABOUT the only thing on the up during the global financial crisis is gold.

And that has breathed new life into a mine in Victoria's golden highlands. Work has begun to revive the Morning Star Gold Mine at Woods Point, which has a long history of producing high yielding ore.

Geological reports suggest there are 910,000 ounces of recoverable pure gold available at Morning Star, most in areas unexplored by previous owners.

Morning Star chief executive Nick Garling said the next three months of trial mining would determine the exact value of the latest reefs to be found.

"We'll take 1000 tonnes of ore every 28 days over October-December, and if we get 8g of gold a tonne of ore we're at break-even," he said. "This mine was one of the biggest earning gold mines in Australia in the 1940s and historically we could look at up to 28g a tonne."

The 24-strong workforce at Morning Star comprises almost every male in Woods Point, which has a total population of 38.

Mr Garling might be CEO but Morning Star is really run by Fran Scott, whose family has been mining and woodcutting in the Woods Point area for generations.

She's the winder driver -- who lifts the buckets of ore and cages of men up and down the shaft -- the occupational health and safety officer and a qualified first aid officer.
