coal plants will be around as long as they are profitable... or they are required for the structural integrity of the NEM... IMO - it will be the former, not the latter. If it gets to the point of the latter...when coal plants are also not-profitable - THAT will be when government bodies will need to step in to incentivise both alternative investment and also ensure that coal plants are kept on until the alternative assets are operational.
The presence of gas plants for firming and rapid deployment of GRID scale storage will cover what is needed when the sun doesn't shine and the wind isn't blowing (across the entire NEM grid - which covers a vast amount of Australia - that isn't that often) - eventually.... not tomorrow... but soon is coming faster than it ever has before.
Said it a few times - but I find watching this transition in the energy market to be fascinating.
