He worked at Nike as design director for a decade. I'm pretty sure Nike did pretty well from the mid 90's to mid 2000's. I think he'd know his stuff and have his connections in the industry. I wouldn't underplay his expertise and experience.
Design is a huge part of Nike as a company. Design director would not be an easy role to hold for so long.
