But I always look at statistics closely, because they are often misused to support a narrative.
So for instance, in that article you posted above, it has a strong emphasis on Delta being an issue for the under 50's. That is its narrative.
But let's break it down and look at the facts:
There are 1417 active cases in Vic.
1041 are u 50
That's 73% of the total.
Of the 183 new cases, 91% are u 50.
And there are 189 Victorians in hospital.
But in an article focused on cases u50, there is no detail on the ages of those hospitalised.
Now let's look at some more facts;
here's a breakdown of Australia's population by age:
Add those percentages up and you will find that 66%
of the population is under 50.
Here's our vaccination rates by age:
Victoria specifically:
Top section is u 50.
Percentages are 1st and 2nd doses.
So over 50's have about a 40% higher vax rate of 1st dose, and about a 60% higher vax rate of 2nd dose.
Putting that together with u50's making up 66% of the population, would you not then expect this group to make up maybe 73 - 91% of cases?
And that the increased prevalence of serious illness among younger people is primarily due to there being a lot more cases, as Delta is a lot more contagious?
