I must admit I was a tad disappointed with this artcle- Id hardly call a university professor putting an optical receptor onto the roof of his faculty a competitor- particularly given we are dealing with Governments and their agencies who I may suspect may have some reticence about using public networks. The article to me reads in fact as an endorsement in the market gap in terms of space infrastructure and the need for more bandwith- we can provide a credible solution now, and global in reach, without the need for ground stations. The below said it all for me, from the article:Whoever builds the necessary infrastructure first stands to make a lot of money.
Bob Gough, head of business development with the satellite communication company Goonhilly Earth Station, which has supported the installation of the WAOGS, explained the value of the global space economy was expected to triple over the next 10 years.
