Shorters holding their position indicates they believe there’s more pain to come and the risk of making a loss is rather minimal in the event they’re wrong considering many have already done quite well on paper at least.
Otherwise they can cover pretty easily over time as it trades flat and/or take advantage of financially worthless announcements that sound sexy anyway making retail traders pile in with FOMO.
I know it’s a popular to speculate some sort of GME style event happening whenever shorters go for a specific stock, but imo anyone who’s holding out hope for something like that to happen probably ought to reassess their investment strategy.
Shorters aren’t dumb and neither are institutional investors (who hold relatively little interest in this stock compared to retail and insiders). They can misjudge a company, yes, but more often than not it’s worth paying attention to those elements.
