Having spent time consulting in the machine vision world, the same/similar things happen with some of the applications I worked on. For example an application that calculated cubic volume of parcels in 3D. Others that measured the exact dimension of logs entering a lumber mill. Calculating thing like LED and SED bow etc. and matching it against contractually agreed to acceptable logs.
Seems in some ways they are trying to patent the wheel. Something that is obvious. I admit that I do not know too much about the specifics of the case.
