@picastoc - my husband was an engineer - but he learnt 'his trade' from the ground up, first mechanical fitter apprenticeship, then drawing and eventually a few units at a university here in Australia - not fully qualified, but a far better and practical engineer than any I have encountered, because of the 'practical' beginnings. There are not enough like him around these days - it's straight to university and little practical experience with materials.
He was a man who could do anything he imagined, was good a drawing up plans even for things only he thought up - etc. drove me nuts in his desire to 'do everything himself' - I had to stop him sometimes. I like practical people, don't like the theorisers.
Go well
