Aw that is a happy, sad but in many ways a very inspiring story.
I have known a few women who were under the thumb. Funnily enough, one was my stepmum.
I actually introduced them and therefore felt somewhat guilty when I saw my Dad being so controlling.
His daughter (me) was much more feisty. I was a bit of a rebel tbh.
I totally adored my Dad, but he could never control me.
We had a bit of a game. He was a vey young father, just 23 when I was born. I think he was always very bossed around by his Welsh Mama.
Therefore he tried to be controlling towards my Mum, but she would not accept this and they divorced when I was around 8 years old.
I don't think he ever got over it. He was a very good Dad and every weekend took myself and my brother out faithfully.
We were actually real buddies
It was in the 60's I did my best to make him get a bit more trendy, to no avail.
He was a collar and tie man, even indoors, bless him.
I was a 60's fashionista girl. I remember one day my Dad spotted me walking along in a tiny checked knitted mini dress accompanied by bright yellow tights! He never let me forget that, he said I had chicken legs
I tried on many occasions to get my stepmum to stand up to my Dad to no avail. He always said that if she died first he would commit suicide as nobody else would put up with him (probably true)
But her answer was that she would be fine on her own, and she is. Even just 2 years after he died and she is stuck at home. She is a very sweet woman and I love her dearly. But why oh why did she not stand up to him, I will never know.
