Ecogra'fs Swedish location and potential connection to Northvolt is clearly an interesting one. Not the least because Northvolt seems to have their aim set on being on of the worlds largest battery manufacturers and has racked up an impressive list of partners and customers so far.
Since Ecograf has multiple business streams now and Northvolt also has a battery recycling division called Revolt there are several different possibilities here:
1. Ecograf will be one of the suppliers, big or small, of "virginal" graphite to Northvolts battery production
2. Ecograf will enhance the Revolt battery recycling operation in a similar way that it is doing with Sungeel
3. Ecograf will do both supply virginal graphite as well as enhance the battery recycling
4. Ecograf will not collaborate with Northvolt at all and the location has the same reasons that Northvolt did when it setup its first location there - excellent access to battery resources as well as logistics in and out via rail sea and roads. On top of that it looks like the location will be a battery cluster in the same way as Kwinana is turning out to be.
We will see which one of these turns out to be the correct one. There is most likely a fair amount of negotiation happening regardless of what the outcome might be.
One interesting thing that has happened since Ecograf revealed its Swedish plans is this. Revolt has increased its planned capacity from 25000 tonnes to 125000 tonnes so 5 times as large... https://www.tellerreport.com/news/2021-09-25-northvolt-invests-heavily-in-battery-recycling---wants-to-build-two-more-facilities-in-skellefte%C3%A5.rJ0hBenXY.html
Just to put that into context Sungeels plant in Hungary is built for 50000 tonnes http://www.thelec.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=3065
We don't know if Revolt is a client or a competitor yet but its importance has grown recently. It also shows that battery recycling in itself will be big business.
