in Chinese language, every word or phrase related to money and finance has the 'gold' in it.
you can say, gold, as a symbol of wealth, has been encoded in their genes. And the Chinese started to use paper money relatively late, only since the start of 20th century, and all their early experiments with paper money failed due to hyperinflation, as bad as the one in post WWI Germany.
The communists didn't use much paper money in their early days, everything was rationed. I don't expect a country which has used gold, silver and copper as currency to convert to paper money in a matter of 40 to 50 years.
