It's possible the optionholder is anticipating a Capital Gains Tax event in 12 months time so is exercising the options to start the 12 month countdown.
Kris Knauer has left no one in any doubt as to the exit strategy of the board/major shareholders so exercising early might be good tax planning.
On a different topic, I wonder when we might get some news on exploration in Ecuador. We might get lucky again!
