Interesting point you make about most shorts being in the money. I've just had a quick look, and i'm pretty surprised to find that it may not be the case.
There was some smart money shorting the stock at it's highs from Dec 2019 - start of Feb 2020, that's for sure - but less than 1% of PAR stock was short during that period.
Around March - May 2020 (circled in yellow below) the PAR share price was below where it currently sits today.
Was there much increase in shorting the stock during this period? Well, funny you should ask....
March-May 2020 seems to be exactly when the percentage shorted wen't skyward! At least 2% (half of the stock shorted) was sold in this exact period.
I've never thought to look before, but your post made me inquisitive. It looks like, yes, there was some smart money to begin with - but after that, a really significant proportion of shorted stock might be out of the money. Interesting.
