From my understanding lateral wells are in the majority of cases the best economic option for exploiting oil or gas reservoirs irrespective of the porosity. Their productive areas are usually significantly greater than vertical wells especially for thinner reservoir sections, and when located at the top of reservoirs their is a significant reduction in the risk of water coning from below the gas or oil water contact - resulting in early water production.

A number of laterals (multilaterals) can be drilled from a single original vertical well and access a number of productive zones significantly improving the economics of wells / fields.
