BHP urged to share Pilbara port
Posted Wed Jun 1, 2005 1:04pm AEST
The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) says BHP Billiton Iron Ore should share its existing Pilbara port and rail infrastructure, in north-west Western Australia, with companies proposing to build their own.
The suggestion comes from the EPA's assessment of the first stage of the Fortescue Metals Group's (FMG) Pilbara iron ore and infrastructure project.
EPA chairman Wally Cox says considering both FMG's and Hope Downs proposals to build their own infrastructure, it is appropriate to use facilities already in place.
"From an environmental impact point of view it would be preferable if, in fact, there was only one railway line, but we realise there's other issues that need to be taken into account in making that decision, but particularly from an environmental impact - impact on vegetation - it would be preferable if there was one line rather than three," he said.
