Tesla has a program to develop their own chips in house to supplement the supply chain, that is why they were able to outperform every auto maker last quarter. The issue is that they can not develop their own battery metals, they are stuck with the same time tables as every other miner in the world with regards to how fast they can build a mine.
IMO they will gobble up as much supply as they can and attempt to supplement with their own clay asset when ready. The fact is that they need both to compete.
I think far and away Tesla understands the issues far better than any other car maker and that will keep them one step ahead in the coming years.
