The endless and repetitive Affirm talk is nauseating, as if many of us haven’t even bothered to analyse a major competitor. It’s also just cross-promoting now. A few things the Affirm promotors fail to mention:
- Affirm has been operating almost solely in the US for 9 years now since 2012. Quadpay was only founded in 2017 and started from 0 (ie didn’t buy out an existing BNPL player to my knowledge). At this point, Zip US has something like 60% of the active users of Affirm, with Affirm having a 5 year head start.
- Affirm has had the Walmart and Target deals for over two years now - these are not new deals - flashy articles talking about them make them look new, but they are not. They’ve been in place for 2 years and they’ve only managed to help Affim get about 3m more users than Zip US out of a TAM of about 150m people.
With BF only 42 days away, pilots with enterprise retailers in place and the global CEO in the US for 3 months, let’s compare the two in early December - anything beforehand is premature and completely misses the bigger picture.
