Even at the very end, if there is a settlement, you would have the option to sign up then and receive a payout. So there's no rush for you to do anything as it may take 3-5 years.
If/when you sign up there's a few hoops to jump through to determine your eligibility i.e. that you bought shares during the relevant window. Anyone who was eligible but doesn't do these steps won't receive anything if there is eventually any kind of settlement.
