The number of end bricks and top bricks would also be a factor because they would have a side without mortar - a side that would have mortar were it in the centre of the wall. This means that short v's long walls, number of windows, height of wall... would all influence mortar surface area. Perhaps this makes 6.5mm mortar thickness reasonable?
